What does a voice AI phone agent cost in 2026?
Voice AI pricing in 2026 splits into four models that are hard to compare from the headline number alone: developer platforms billed per minute, enterprise contracts, managed vendors with a subscription plus a per-minute meter, and flat subscriptions with minutes included. The advertised rate rarely equals the monthly bill. This report summarizes what each model actually costs once the parts each vendor leaves out are added back in.
Model 1: DIY developer platforms
Vapi, Retell, and Bland sell voice-agent infrastructure to developers. The advertised per-minute rate is the platform layer only; on Vapi and Retell the language model, speech-to-text, voice synthesis, and telephony are billed on top, and the agent itself, meaning prompts, integrations, and monitoring, is your engineering work to build and maintain.
- Vapi: $0.05/min platform fee. Computed all-in at published provider rates: roughly $0.11 to $0.20/min before engineering time. HIPAA is a $2,000/mo add-on.
- Retell AI: $0.07 to $0.31/min depending on components. Computed from Retell's own component prices: about $0.13/min with a mid-tier LLM; premium voices and top LLMs push it to $0.19+.
- Bland AI: $0.14/min with no platform fee, or lower rates with a $299 or $499 monthly plan. About $0.155/min all-in on the Start tier; the $299 tier only pays off above roughly 15,000 minutes per month.
The number these platforms do not print is the build. Independent worked examples put the initial engineering at roughly €8,000 (about 16 days at €500/day) plus ongoing tuning and monitoring, which dominates the per-minute rate for any SME volume.
Model 2: enterprise contracts
Synthflow moved to enterprise pricing starting at $30,000 per year, scoped per deployment. That is contact-center economics, roughly $2,500 per month equivalent, and not built for a company with one phone line.
Model 3: managed European vendors, metered
Common across local European markets: a setup fee, a monthly subscription, and a per-minute meter. A typical offer is €149/mo plus €0.39/min with a €1,500 setup, which lands around €664/mo at 1,000 minutes. Variants include high-base scripted-campaign products (€500/mo plus €0.03/min) and carrier voice bots (€250/mo plus €0.05/min) that are built for announcement playback rather than open two-way conversation. The entry price looks small; the meter is where the money is.
Model 4: flat subscription, minutes included
The fourth model is a flat monthly price with a minute allowance and setup included. The reference example in the European SME segment is Canarics at €249/mo for inbound or €349/mo for outbound (inbound included), with 1,000 minutes in the plan and no setup fee; custom integrations, where needed, run €500 to €1,000 one time. Against the typical metered offer above, a flat €249 plan is cheaper once usage passes roughly 250 minutes per month, which is about 85 average business calls.
Worked comparison at 1,000 minutes per month
| Option | Monthly run cost | One-time cost | Steady-state total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vapi (computed stack) | $110–195 across 4–5 vendor accounts | ~€8,000 engineering | ~€1,300/mo incl. maintenance effort |
| Retell AI (computed stack) | $130–190 | ~€8,000 engineering | ~€1,300/mo |
| Bland AI (Start tier) | ~$155 | ~€8,000 engineering | ~€1,300/mo |
| Synthflow (Enterprise) | from ~$2,500 equivalent | included | from ~€2,500/mo |
| Typical EU vendor, metered (€149 + €0.39/min) | €539 | €1,500 setup | €664/mo |
| Typical carrier voice bot (€250 + €0.05/min) | €300 | €300 setup | €325/mo, playback-oriented product |
| Flat subscription (Canarics) | €249 inbound / €349 outbound | €0 (custom integrations €500–1,000 if any) | €249 or €349/mo |
Reading the table. The DIY rows are not bad products; they are a different purchase. You are buying infrastructure and hiring yourself as the integrator. For a team with in-house engineers and unusual requirements, that trade can be right. For a company that wants a working phone agent without an engineering project, the comparison collapses to the metered-vs-flat question, and that is decided by monthly minutes.
Questions to ask any vendor
- Is the advertised rate all-in, or does it exclude the LLM, speech layers, or telephony?
- What is the setup fee, and what does setup actually include?
- What happens at the minute cap: hard stop, overage rate, or forced upgrade?
- Who maintains the agent when your prices, hours, or booking system change?
- Can it hold an open conversation, or is it a scripted flow with playback?

Bland's own comparison estimates Vapi at $0.13 to $0.30/min, consistent with the range above.
